Knight Upgrades are a concept used in Legend of the Conquerors. These are upgrades that can be attached to a knight while it is on the board. Two such upgrades are included in [Legend of the Conquerors]: the cannon and the cavalry.
Knight upgrades are only present on the board attached to knights belonging to the same player, and confer additional abilities onto that knight only.
All knight upgrades are also associated with an upgrade building. In order for a player to attach a knight upgrade to a knight, its corresponding upgrade building must have previously been built.
A knight may only have one upgrade attached to it at any given time.
When the upgrade building for a knight upgrade is built, a player may immediately attach the upgrade to one of their knights on the board for no cost.
The rules do not indicate whether or not it is possible to build the upgrade building if the upgrade cannot be immediately attached.
Detaching Upgrades: By paying the cost to detach an upgrade, the upgrade may be detached from one knight and attached to another.
A player may not voluntarily discard an upgrade; they must pay the upgrade’s detach cost.
A player may not detach an upgrade without reattaching it to another knight.
A player may not detach an upgrade and reattach it to the same knight, as it would be considered discarding resources for no effect.
Because of the fact that a knight cannot have more than one attached upgrade at a time, it is impossible to swap upgrades on two knights without involving a third.
If a knight moves or is displaced, the upgrade is moved with the knight. Similarly, if a knight is promoted, the upgrade is retained on promotion.
If a knight with an attached upgrade is ever removed from the board, the upgrade may be reattached to a different knight for no cost during a player’s own turn.
Note that if a player loses their knight when it is not their turn, they must wait until their next turn to reattach their upgrade.
Unlike the initial attachment of an upgrade upon purchase of the upgrade building, this reattachment is optional.
Because all Legend of the Conquerors scenarios only accommodate 4 players, the rules do not indicate whether knight upgrades can be attached during the Special Build Phase. However, it can generally be assumed that under the Paired Player Turn rule, knight upgrades can be attached during the paired turn.
