Comprehensive scenario and variant guide for Catan
The Direction Tile and Direction Die are two pieces of equipment introduced in Legend of the Conquerors. They are used together to govern the mechanics behind the movement of Conquerors in the expansion’s scenarios.
The Direction Tile is a hexagonal tile slightly smaller than a hex. Although the tile is double-sided, both sides are identical in terms of gameplay, differing only in their background: one side depicts ocean while the other depicts a swamp. On the face of each side of the Direction Tile is an indicator with three swords, one red, one yellow, and one green, pointing to three sides of the hex. These three colors appear in the stated order in a clockwise direction. An arrow running clockwise runs under the swords.
The Direction Die is a six-sided die with two faces showing a red sword, two faces showing a yellow sword, and two faces showing a green sword.
The Direction Tile is generally placed on a frame piece or matching hex (ocean or swamp, depending on which side is up), where it remains for the duration of the game. The Direction Tile is always placed so that the swords always point to the sides of a hex. On all official setup charts, the yellow sword will generally be oriented towards the right.
Aside from the fact that the Direction Tiles only point in three of the six directions, the function of the Direction Tile is similar to that of the Castle hex from “Barbarian Attack”. In international sets, the Direction Die is also reminiscent of the Color Die used in the same scenario.
1 Direction Tile and 1 Direction Die is included with Legend of the Conquerors.
