Forts are a neutral piece introduced in Legend of the Conquerors. They are equipment specific to “Free All of Catan!”, used alongside conquerors.

Appearance

English sets use gray hexagonal pieces to represent forts. Each fort has one sticker affixed to its bottom side, associating a fort with a reward for clearing it. Conquerors are then stacked on its blank top side to complete the fort piece.

International sets use figures with a hexagonal well large enough to hold a conqueror. Each figure has a sticker affixed to its bottom side, associating it with its reward.

Note that because of the shape of the pieces, an international conqueror figure can be stacked on top of an English fort piece, but an English conqueror cannot be placed inside the well of an international fort piece.

Gameplay

Forts do not exist as a separate figure in and of itself; they are always associated with the conqueror, and its strength is that of the strength of the conqueror placed on top. For English pieces, the side of the piece does not matter, as once placed on the board they are stationary until removed.

• Capturing Forts: A fort is captured if the combined strength of all adjacent knights are greater than that of the strength of the fort. When a fort is captured, each player with an adjacent knight advances one space on the hero track, and receives the reward shown on the underside of the fort piece.
  • Knights do not need to be activated in order to participate in the capture of a fort. They are also not deactivated when capturing a fort, if they were activated beforehand.
  • The capture of a fort is considered automatic. As such, cavalry who move off of their owners’ road networks can be used to capture distant forts.
  • Players with multiple adjacent knights do not advance their hero track more than one space per fort. Similarly, rewards can only be awarded once per player per fort, regardless of how many of a player’s knights contributed to its capture.
  • All rewards from forts are taken from the supply, in player order, starting with the player to move.
    • No compensation is provided in the event of a resource shortage or lack of tokens.
