Catan: Cities & Knights, originally titled The Cities & Knights of Catan, is the second major expansion to Catan. Originally released in 1998, after the release of the English 3rd edition, Cities & Knights effectively provided a single scenario with greater complexity and advanced mechanics. Within the color coding system of expansions, English sets originally used green, but switched over to the international sets’ orange as of the English 6th edition.
All of the mechanics introduced in Cities & Knights work together, with few concepts that can stand alone for potential integration with other scenarios. Most scenarios in Seafarers could accommodate the rule additions to Cities & Knights easily, though some are incompatible by design.

Notes:
- Viking wood sets include a 4th city wall per player.
- Some international sets do not include a building cost reference card in the extension, resulting in only 4 of the 6 players having them.
- Early 2nd international edition sets used an alternate knight design where one arm was moveable to denote activation status.
- Although the base game has included a red die since the English 4th edition (2nd international edition) for the purposes of not needing one packaged with Cities & Knights, international sets still include a red die for compatibility purposes, in case the base game does not include one.
- Some select English 5th edition and 3rd international edition sets will use the Paired Player Turn rule, and thus include the Paired Player markers
- As with the other extensions, the color of the 6th player is brown prior to the English 6th edition and 4th international edition, and purple afterwards.
