Comprehensive scenario and variant guide for Catan
City Walls are an add-on to cities introduced in Cities & Knights that allows its owner to raise their hand limit. Subsequent to their introduction, they were also made part of Atlantis.
City walls were originally introduced as flat square pieces, for which the city piece would rest upon. In the 1st international edition, a sticker can also be applied to the piece for decorative purposes to give the piece a brick wall pattern.
Since the 2nd international edition, city walls are ring pieces that are attached to the city figure. Viking wood pieces are also ring-shaped pieces, meant to slot the city figure within.
English 6th edition pieces are larger square pieces, but also have a groove used to rest the city piece.
In Atlantis, city walls are cardboard tokens that a player can rest their city pieces on top of. Unlike their Cities & Knights counterparts, these are not player pieces.
A city may be upgraded to have city walls. Each city wall on the board raises the hand limit of its owner by two cards.
3 city walls are included for the red, blue, orange, and white players in Cities & Knights, and 3 city walls are included for the green and purple (brown before the English 6th edition / 4th international edition) in the Cities & Knights extension. Note that a Viking wood Cities & Knights set includes 4 city wall pieces, but only 3 are used in a given game.
7 neutral city walls are included in Atlantis.
